China's computing capability continues to grow

The scale of China's computing industry has reached 2.6 trillion yuan ($362 billion) in 2022, accounting for more than 20 percent of the telecommunication industry in the country, according to a senior official from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

China has a relatively sophisticated, large and innovative computing industry and its core competency is continuously improving, said Zhao Zhiguo, chief engineer of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

Currently, the world is under a new round of technological and industry transformation and a new generation of information and communication technology has transformed social and economic development, he said at the 2023 World Computing Conference, which opened on Friday in Changsha, Hunan province.

The computing industry is facing opportunities and challenges, and innovation is the key to overcoming the risks and seize the opportunities, he said.

The country is ranked second in the world in terms of the computing capability and has shipped more than 20.91 million general servers and 820,000 AI servers, he said.

Shen Xiaoming, Party secretary of Hunan province, said that, as one of the birth places of super computing, Hunan will continue to integrate in the global computing industrial chain in a more open way and push for the integrated development of the computing industry.

The province will focus on advanced computing, audio and video and mass application of Beidou technology, he said.

More efforts will be made to promote the innovative development of the computing industry, strengthen the introduction and cultivation of talent in the area and reach breakthroughs in a number of key technologies in the sector, he added.
